Hearth Farm is looking for a farm worker for the 2027 growing season and beyond.  Open to payment and/or trade in acreage/farm infrastructure for your own personal farm dreams.  Food growers with 3 years + experience on a small mixed crop operation are encouraged to apply!  Please email sarah@thegrangeduvall.com with letter of interest and references.

Hearth Farm is a fairly feral mixed-crop 3-acre operation in Carnation WA that supplies veg, fruit, herbs, flowers and pork to the Grange farm to table to farm restaurant, 5 miles north.

THE LAND

Hearth Farm grows on 2 parcels:

Lower Hearth: a 1.5 + acre of bottomland in the fertile Snoqualmie Valley floodplain.  1 acre is fenced to keep the growing elk populations out. This land has on it 4 100’ high tunnels, irrigation, a tractor and walk-behind, and lots of tools. Hearth’s cultural practices prioritize minimal tillage, discerning weeding, and incorporation of a concurrent vermicompost system from the kitchen waste stream of the Grange. Access to a barn with a walk-in cooler also part of deal.

Upper Hearth: our homestead, 4 miles away and 200’ upland from Lower, where fruit trees, herbs, perennial crops and flowers grow and a propagation house sits.  The pigs run in the surrounding woodlands.

THE PEOPLE

Sarah and Luke are the farming couple behind Hearth Farm.  They also own and operate the Grange. Sarah is the primary farmer; Luke is operations/infrastructure guy and Hog Boss.

They were the founding farmers of Oxbow Farm, which brought them to the Snoqualmie Valley in 1999.  They left in 2015 and started Hearth Farm the same year. In 2018 they opened the Grange farm to table to honor the surrounding land and the good food it yields.

Sarah has 30+ years of food growing experience and 25+ years of education experience, teaching others the art of food production through Seattle Tilth, Edmonds Community College’s Agroecology program, PCC, and Oxbow Farm.

THE PLAN

In our 9th year running a farm and a restaurant, I (Sarah) wish to step back from full time to part time operations at Hearth Farm to concentrate more on the vermicompost part of the farm, education and events.  I hope to find someone who will take over part of the farming, which would require following the Grange’s crop plan for the growing season. Roughly 2-3 days a week worth of work would go into Hearth Farm, waxing in the warmer months, waning in cooler.  Will this person want to grow their own crops on adjacent land for market? Utilize some of Hearth Farm’s high tunnels for their own operation?  Will they want to grow just for the Grange for the season, and take stock for future? Come in with your own ideas and hopes and dreams and we can figure out a fair deal.  We are open-minded and will entertain all ideas from the right person!

THE MARKETS

The Grange is currently the only market for Hearth Farm produce, with bumper crops sold to SVGC. There is room to grow specialty crops through your own operation for the Grange. There are as well many outlets for farm sales within the valley and nearby: Snoqualmie Valley Growers Coop, The Farm Stand (21 Acres), The Food Hub, and the plentiful farmers markets in and around Seattle are all marketable avenues.  We are 25 miles from Seattle.
