Growth Notes: SEPTEMBER

September is Convergence Zone on the PNW farm.
• Summer squash meets winter squash.
• Tomatoes pump away, joined by fall broccoli and cauliflower.
• Peppers + Pumpkins, ready
• The cantaloupe and watermelon are finally ripe—too late to the party for some. Me, I’ll take them whenever they choose to finish!

EVERYthing that grows on our farm is ready now. Harvest Season is not clocked by the pumpkin spice lattes here, but by the absence of bins to harvest all the produce INTO!
All are full.
Thank you, Elk, for kindly taking the corn, butternut, beans, celeriac, chard, and beets off our harvest list…you saved us from buying more bins 🙂

I have roughly 500 row feet of paste tomatoes growing in the biggest hoophouse at Hearth Farm. It is an overwhelming amount to take in, upon stepping into the house: so much red/orange/pink in the green verdance. If you are solo harvesting, it makes you swoon.

Thank goodness paste varieties hang patiently onto the vine! (Not like heirlooms, the divas that burst out of their corsets with a ½ day’s overripening.) Paste tomatoes have such low water content that some varieties can handle a week or even two of ignore-ance. And I can IGNORE, as I procrastinate great.

This is the season that hundreds and hundreds of pounds of paste tomatoes get made into PIZZA SAUCE. Chef Nate and his crew are cooking down vats of it, flavored with herbs from the farm. Come taste the local terroire of our woodfired sourdough pizzas with the 2024 Hearth Sauce! For a limited time only…

Thank you, Kate Ryan, for gifting me these magic Piennolo del Vesuvio paste tomato seeds! They are the star of the pastes. The Piennolo tomato is gorgeous: red and glossy and clustered on a truss, descending in size, with a little nipple at the bottom of each one…so they look like a DDD-AA bra size calculator, in red boobies! This varietal is famous for being able to bunch by the truss and hang in a dark dry space to extend the season. I have bunches of them decorating my kitchen and barn, we shall see what we shall see. Kate, you will soon get a bouquet!
